Trying to decide between Golden, BC and Banff or Canmore? Here’s how they really compare.
If you’re planning a trip out to the Canadian Rockies, there’s a good chance you’ve landed on the same question most people do at some point, should we stay in Banff, Canmore, or somewhere like Golden, BC?(Link to BLOG 1)
They’re only about an hour apart, but they feel completely different once you’re actually there. And it’s not really a question of which one is better, it’s more about what kind of trip you want to have.
I’ll say this upfront; I genuinely love Banff National Park. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and there’s a reason it’s as popular as it is. The scenery is insane, the town has great restaurants, world-class limestone climbing, and there’s still that classic Canadian Rockies charm underneath it all.
But there’s also a trade-off that comes with that.

If you’re there in peak season, it can feel absolutely flooded. You end up spending more time than you’d expect just looking for parking, and it’s pretty easy to drop a lot of money on things that don’t necessarily feel worth it. The views are still incredible, but the experience can start to feel a bit managed.
Golden, BC is a different story.

Golden, BC itself doesn’t sit inside a national park, but it is known as the “Heart Of The Parks”, as it is surrounded by 6 Canadian National Parks including:
- Yoho National Park,
- Glacier National Park
- Banff National Park
- Kootenay National Park
- Mount Revelstoke National Park
- Jasper National Park, accessed by the world famous Icefields Parkway, which is quite possibly the most beautiful highway in the world
The shift is noticeable almost immediately. It has just as much (if not more) world-class terrain, but the town hasn’t been built around tourism in the same way. It feels like a place people actually live, not just somewhere people pass through.
If you’re leaning toward something quieter, more real, and less built-up, Golden, BC tends to win pretty quickly.
We put together mini guide of unique places to stay in Golden, BC in 2026
You’ve still got access to everything in Banff National Park, the Icefields parkway, The Columbia Icefields and Lake Louise, but the pace is slower, and the experience feels a bit more your own. But, the cherry on top is really having Kicking Horse Mountain Resort at your doorstep.

Then you’ve got the national treasure that is Glacier National Park just to the west of Golden, BC in the historic Roger’s Pass. Now you’re out of the Rocky Mountains and into the Selkirk Range, which has a mystical aura of it’s own and some of the best trekking I’ve personally ever done. As an added bonus, The Blaeberry Base Glamping and Boutique cabins is even closer to Glacier National Park than Golden, BC, shaving off 15 minutes if you want to get an extra 15 minutes of sleep or brew a fancy coffee like I do!

The people you run into are different too. Banff is what you see on Instagram, and for good reason. People come to see the iconic spots, check them off, and move on.

Golden, BC tends to attract people who are looking for something a bit less obvious. Climbers, skiers, bikers, hikers, people who want to spend time playing and exploring in the mountains, rather than just see them.
One of the biggest differences, and something people don’t always think about ahead of time, is the accommodation itself.
In Banff or Canmore, you’re mostly choosing between hotels. Nice ones, sure, but still hotels.
This is where Golden really separates itself.
Instead of choosing between hotels, you can Stay somewhere that actually feels like part of the mountains.
In Golden, BC, the options are completely different. Cabins on acreages, A-frames tucked into the forest, geodesic domes with full mountain views, Buffalo ranches. Places that actually feel like they belong in the landscape, not to discredit hotels, but that isn’t what we’re about. Not to mention you can eat local produce, meat and eggs all locally raised and grown in the Columbia Valley.
It’s something we hear all the time from guests, that where they stayed ended up being one of the highlights of the trip, not just a place to sleep.
If you’re curious what that actually looks like, we put together a full guide of Unique Places to Stay in Golden, BC.

Cost and logistics are where the contrast becomes even clearer.
Banff National Park, or Canmore, AB are both more expensive, more crowded, and require a bit more planning if you want to do it properly.

Golden, BC is generally the opposite. Easier to settle into, more space, and a bit more flexibility.
And one thing a lot of people don’t realize, Lake Louise is about the same distance from Golden, BC as it is from Banff. So, you’re not really missing out on anything, you’re just choosing a different place to base yourself.

If you’re trying to figure out The Best Time to Visit Golden, BC, we wrote a guide about it, because the experience shifts quite a bit throughout the year.
Shape
We’ve had a lot of people stay with us who originally planned to stay in Banff, or who added Golden, BC to their trip almost as an afterthought.
And the feedback is almost always the same.
They’re really glad they did.
Some of them came just to check out Yoho National Park or Lake Louise and ended up loving the slower pace in the Columbia Valley. Others were just looking for something a bit different and found that Golden, BC felt more like what they imagined the Canadian Rockies would be.
A lot of people end up doing both, which is probably the best way to approach it.
Stay in Golden, BC, then take a day trip into Banff National Park to see Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and the other iconic spots. It’s an easy drive, and you get the best of both worlds, the views, and then somewhere quieter to come back to at the end of the day.

At the end of it, Banff is incredible. There’s no way around that.
But it’s not the only way to experience the Canadian Rockies.
Golden, BC offers a different version of our great Canadian Rocky Mountain landscape that feels a bit less crowded, a bit less polished, and a lot more personal. And for a lot of people, that ends up being the better trip.
If you’re leaning toward Golden, BC and want a place that reflects that same balance between comfort and wilderness, you can check our limited availability and plan your stay at The Blaeberry Base Glamping & Boutique Cabins.
