Why We Built The Blaeberry Base (And Why It’s Not Just Another Vacation Rental)

The Blaeberry Base From The Sky

This is the story behind The Blaeberry Base and why it was built differently from traditional vacation rentals.

We didn’t set out to build a cabin.

We set out to build something cool and different, we would actually want to stay in. We wanted to perhaps supplement a bit of our income from our jobs at the time, but mostly just have a little dome sanctuary facing the mountains. It was selfish at first. Little did we know we would become full time operators with a bigger and bigger vision every summer. After our first dome (LSD or Luxe Serenity Dome) became popular, we decided to renovate our then house (Fireløge), then rent it out while we drove across the United States in our van to Yosemite to climb. Fireløge ended up being such a hit that we opted to continue living in the van and climbing while our guests enjoyed it as much as we did! Then, we just kept going.

What started as something small slowly turned into something people now travel across the world to experience.

A lot of places you stay fall into one of two categories. They’re either functional, or they’re aesthetic. They look good, or they work well, but they don’t necessarily create an experience.

That was the gap we kept coming back to, but we think we nailed it pretty well.

Golden, BC
The charming Downtown core of Golden, BC with the Purcell Mountains as it’s backdrop

Golden, BC itself played a big role in shaping that.

It’s not Banff, and that’s exactly why it matters. It still feels like a real mountain town, with a strong ski and climbing culture, and a community that isn’t built entirely around tourism. Locals of all walks of life, mountain guides, ski coaches, mill workers, train conductors, are all living here full time and playing in our mountains.

We wanted to build something that fit into that, not something that felt out of place.

The Blaeberry Valley, the setting that inspired The Blaeberry Base

The Blaeberry Valley made the decision easier.

As you come up from the highway and over that first hill on Moberly Branch Road, and set your gaze on Hedberg Peak for the first time, you know you’re somewhere very special.

It’s close to town, but it feels removed. The terrain is more rugged, the pace is slower, and there’s a sense that you’re “off the beaten path”. It’s also historically significant, as part of the route first pioneered by David Thompson when trying to forge a route through the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean to establish the fur trade.

It just felt like the right place to put the creators cap on.

From the beginning, we noticed we had many different types of travellers, and so we knew we couldn’t have just one type of stay.

We started to build out different options so people could choose what fits them best. A larger cabin for group feasts and ski trips, Luxe Serenity Dome for romantic getaways, The Hutte for a cozy space with chill outdoor amenities, and our newest DripDōme for something a bit more unique with a touch of luxe. Different price points, different energy, but all connected by the same idea.

One of the biggest decisions we made was around how the property itself is laid out.

Privacy matters, but we’ve always felt like community matters just as much.

So each unit has its own space, but there are also shared areas, like the courtyard, the sauna, and the open spaces around the property, where people can interact if they want to. It’s not forced, but it happens naturally.

It’s not a hotel, and it’s not trying to be. That’s the whole point.

Over time, we realized that what people remember most isn’t just the place, it’s what they do while they’re there.

That’s where the idea for The Blaeberry Rituals Collection came from, which we will be launching in Summer 2026.

Things like a fondue night, a custom celebration kit, or a simple drinking chocolate ritual. Small things, but they create moments that stick with people, and that they talk about for a long time.

At the end of the day, Blaeberry Base sits somewhere between comfort and wilderness, and between privacy and connection. That’s the space we were aiming for, and it’s what we’re continuing to build on every season.

If that sounds like a place that calls to you, we would love to have you here.
